Milwaukee, WI – Maskani Place has been nominated for the State Farm Building Blocks Award as part of the 2016 MANDI Awards. In celebration of the nomination, Heartland Housing, Inc., the building’s owner, interviewed resident Michelle Guzman to share how Maskani Place has positively impacted her life. You can read Michelle’s full story at Urban Milwaukee under “MANDI Nominee Helps Homeless Families.”

Maskani Place plays a vital role in supporting the community and its residents — serving as a place for learning, growth, transformation, and stability. It represents a major milestone in Milwaukee’s ongoing efforts to combat homelessness.

Milwaukee, sadly, ranks fourth in the nation for child poverty, with approximately 43% of its children living below the federal poverty line. “This city has far too many children living in poverty, and we must do even more to ensure families have access to housing and support services that give them a fighting chance,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (quoted in Urban Milwaukee, May 27, 2014). Mayor Barrett also praised Maskani Place as a catalytic project for the community.
